Annual Review 2022-23: Taking Private Capital Forwards

This Annual Review reflects on the past membership year, summarising the policy engagement, proprietary research, events, and other activity that the BVCA conducted to support you and fellow members.

The industry, on whose behalf the Association serves, has been resilient and continues to adapt to fast-changing circumstances very quickly. The BVCA remains agile and continues to adapt to the needs of members and the expectations of external stakeholders, with the response to the SVB crisis being a recent example. As private capital has continued to grow, it has inevitably become part of the mainstream economy and therefore the intensity of BVCA activity on members’ behalf has grown considerably. This is set to grow further.

Looking ahead, the BVCA will continue to focus on key policy areas – ranging from retailisation and accessing DC pension capital, to the competitiveness of the UK’s tax and regulatory frameworks for the private capital industry. Other key areas include national security transaction screening, the ever-evolving UK, EU and US sustainability rules, new OECD tax rules, reforms to R&D tax relief and the ongoing campaign to remove the sunset clause for the EIS and VCT schemes. Our policy agenda is increasingly wide-ranging and requires deeper and deeper expertise. We have continued to invest in our team, and special reports, in the past year and to engage with our members on a range of issues, including sustainability, diversity and inclusion.

We continue to support the industry’s licence to operate through our committee work, and to connect the industry with our wide range of events and training courses providing opportunities for networking, exchanging knowledge and sharing best practice.

The Annual Review provides an overview of how the industry’s agenda has moved forwards in the past year, and is accompanied by podcasts with Charlie Troup, BVCA Chair 2022-23 and Garry Wilson, incoming Chair.
