The BVCA is pleased to announce Matthew Sabben-Clare as the Chair of its Council, the association’s board of directors.

Having been vice chair for the past year, Matthew takes over at a time when the private capital industry increasingly demonstrates its value to the UK economy.

Matthew is a Senior Advisor to Cinven. Previously, he was Head of Cinven’s Capital Markets team and Chief Administrative Officer. Prior to his roles at Cinven, Matthew worked at Merrill Lynch and J. Henry Schroder & Co in financing and banking roles. He graduated from Cambridge University and is AMCT-qualified.

Matthew has been heavily engaged in the BVCA’s work with industry and government for over a decade, serving on its Council since 2018. Between 2013 and 2018, he sat on the BVCA's Global Capital Committee, including acting as its Chair between 2015 and 2018.

On his appointment, Matthew said:

“As the new Chair of the BVCA, I am delighted to represent the sector. Private capital investment supports 2.2 million jobs and thousands of businesses, playing a huge role in driving growth and prosperity across the UK.

“I’d like to thank to outgoing Chair Garry Wilson, who has passionately told the story of our industry, and the benefits realised in the communities where we invest.

“As Chair, I will work to demonstrate how private equity and venture capital brings investment and expertise which grows businesses for the long term, and is critical to the UK’s future economic success.”

Michael Moore, Chief Executive of the BVCA said:

“The BVCA team is looking forward to working with Matthew in his new role as Chair. Matthew brings with him a wealth of industry experience, having played an active role in the BVCA’s development for over a decade.

“He has already established his ability to make a compelling case for private capital. His focus on how the active business model improves and grows the businesses it invests in will be a key theme of the coming year as we demonstrate how our industry is a partner for growth and a driver of prosperity.”
